My favorite operating system would have to be Haiku OS (second favorite is OpenBSD, third is Linux, and in last place is Faildows). What's yours?
windows (8/8.1 specificaly), then android(you said operating system, never specified which type of operating system ), then linux, then mac os
You see, when I go on the internet and I see people arguing about, say, Xbox 360 and PS3, I can't help but think back to grade school, with the console wars between Sega, Nintendo and Sony. People want to defend what they use so they can justify buying them. To not defend it would be admitting you chose wrong. I understand that. But that's something that goes down in grade school. But for someone like me, who actively uses all three operating systems, I accept what each has to offer. I am typing this on a Mac, I game on a Windows and I work with Linux. I have problems with each but if it's impeding what I do, I just switch. Same with phones - I have an old iPhone, a used Galaxy and I've used a Windows phone.
The irony in your username is somewhat amusing. I'd be on Linux if it wasn't for DirextX. Probably Mint.
I'd say Windows XP, and Windows 7. I don't like Mac OSX at all... and I haven't really seen much of Linux, but I'd gladly switch to Linux if it had DirectX and OpenGL support or whatever it needs to be compatible with many programs. And Windows 8... Well... Just, no.
I like Windows 8/8.1 a lot, though I understand that it's not great without a touchscreen. However, with a touchscreen, it's really nice.
Windows 8 is better optimised and runs slightly faster, but I'm thinking of rolling back to Win7 as the lack of a start menu is starting to really annoy me and 9 isn't coming out until 2015. I think Windows 8 is exactly the opposite of Vista. Vista was a great idea and a huge theorical improvement over XP, but it was poorly executed and the result was a buggy piece of crap. Windows 8, on the other hand, is very well made, but it was a terrible idea. And it gets worse every day you use it. Seriously, who thought merging a tablet OS into a desktop OS would be a good idea? Having a full desktop in a tablet is nice, however having to deal with a tablet menu on a desktop is horrible. Plus it's extremely slow to just type in something to search compared to the standard start menu. - - - Updated - - - Win8 is great, but for the reasons I already mentioned above I'm starting to hate it more every day. Oh god no. XP was great in 2001, but looking back it's absolutely horrible and inefficient. - - - Updated - - - I know. Hehe.
Hit windows key and start typing your search term, that was very slow... Its faster than the start menu, took forever to use that thing. Classic Start can bring it back if you miss that thing though. - - - Updated - - - Linux has had OpenGL since OpenGL was created. There really isn't anything stopping programs from running on Linux except dev support, its a lot more malleable than the win32 api. The only issue is that a lot of software was written for windows only so uses the win32 api directly and may only compile under msvc or another windows only toolchain. Instead its fully possible to write portable software that compiles in more than 1 tool chain, just a lot of companies didn't forsee anything other than windows usage and as such it takes a lot of effort to go back and change the program so it will compile on another system. Bucking the trend, I like MinGW as my windows C/C++ compiler, full win32 port of the GCC tool chain popular on *nix systems so just about anything that builds under MinGW will build under GCC on Linux or OSX (does not mean the program is cross platform as I can still use DirectX for instance and that is not available on non windows platforms, there is a lot more to cross platform code, but toolchains are a good start).
In this order: Windows XP Windows 8.1 / Windows 7 (Tie) Windows 2000 Linux And then at the bottom of the list, just after OSX, is Vista. On both my laptop and netbook I have a dual boot with XP and 7. (Desktop is just 8.1)
I see... I didn't know that, thanks for correcting me. I just knew Linux didn't have something that windows did so many programs aren't compatible. Otherwise... I wish all the programs for windows were also compatible with Linux... Otherwise, I agree with people, that Windows 8 is very efficient, but I hate the solid colour "fluffy" UI and animations, the new start menu, and how it always asks you to look for an 'app' in the 'app'store to open a file. I'm very sure that Candy Crush is going to help me open a .rar file... I also hate the term 'app' being used instead of application... I don't really know why, but probably because it sounds too "fluffy" if you know what I mean. EDIT: I also strongly agree with BlueScreen that merging a tablet OS with a desktop OS is stupid.
Extremely opinion based, I personally find it far easier to use then the start menu from the days of old Sent from the 3rd galaxy from the talks of tapping
Windows 7. The look of it is just great and it's just simple enough to understand. I feel that the new "Start menu" (If they still even call it that on windows 8) is just a waste of space and added confusion. Most games are best supported on that OS as well it seems. However I do still have some great memories with windows XP having used that in my childhood to play a ton of old Need For Speed games lol
Being the computer illiterate slob that I am I have to say Win98 and XP were my favs. Millennium and Vista were so terrible even a horribly computer illiterate slob couldn't have wandered astray into those hulking nightmares. I have to say Win 8 was annoying at first but for me it's as stable as I like it to be and the automatic support is really nice.
Linux is just a kernel and not OS. Android is using linux kernel, but you don't say: "I have a linux phone"
Windows 7 Ultimate is an operating system I swear by. I'm sad that they're actively phasing it out now.
