Supposedly 60 whole horsepower, but I think the broken wheel bearing and possibly leaking head gasket ate some of that. And a small update once again, I heard a clunking noise on a test drive and turns out a bearing from the half shaft fell out: I am now waiting for a new shaft (46€ for the whole piece, damn) and gotta fix the handbrake. Then I think, I hope, there won't be much left to do.
Got the speedo working and somewhat calibrated, it's basically just an arduino reading a magnet on the cv axle. Handbrake was surprisingly easy to fix, these older renaults are supposed to have automatically adjusting something in the rear but a previous owner had taken the "automatic" bit out. So I just tightened the handbrake thing inside the drum brakes by hand and now it holds. The exhaust seems to be leaking from one of the connections once again, and I've only built it twice. And I guess my fuel line might have a slight leak under pressure, but that's nothing serious. Soon road worthy and legal? The way things have broken down over the summer I wouldn't hold my breath. Who knows what will fall apart next, so in the mean time, I bought another one (for spare parts and temporary daily):
waow it's been 2 months already since I blessed your souls with an update. Now would be a good time to talk about "legality" or "inspection", but long story short, I'm upgrading the brakes. And whaddaya know, I already did the rear brakes! are they any bigger? yees. where did I get them? from the megane. are they just a bolt on upgrade that can be done with 2€ brake line connectors? yees. I also got new brake cylinders, since the old ones were so rusty I couldn't even bleed the brakes. Now it stops a lot better! For the front brakes, I can either go with the bigger twingo brakes, the megane brakes or perhaps with brakes from a same era clio. But since I already have a megane, which luckily does have brakes, I'm going to attempt option 2. This also means I will have to find fitting 15" wheels. It's not going to be finished soon tho, because the winter is coming and I'm not going to work in the freezing cold. So I'm storing the twingo (in a parking lot) and taking apart the megane over the winter. I'm in no hurry, since making this thing street legal can be a pain and I already have a second, perfectly-good-plates-having twingo to drive. And about the legality, I might also need a front sway bar but I'm not going to sweat over it for now. And as the days get colder, small block twingo can give some help to the big block twingo The red one has a pretty dead battery. The fuel pump/coils relay also failed recently, so I replaced it with the AC relay. All fine now and the car still moves.
Just a warning about 15" wheels, I bought a set of 14" wheels for mine and they rub on the inner fenders it's certainly seen better days though so that might be down to the suspension being tired and worn out
yeah, the fitment needs to be spot on. Mine has a lowered suspension (thank you previous owner) and there is more weight on the front now. I have the 15" wheels from the megane, but they rub on the front shocks but that may change if I take the whole front hub assembly from the megane...
Supposedly 15x6.5" intra rims fit on a mk1 with 195/45R16 tires, but they may rub in the rear. Worse case, you just put slight spacers on it and roll the rear arches a bit. Also be careful with ET up front. Stock 14x6.5" wheels on twingo have ET36 if I recall correctly, After I've put my old megane wheels on it with ET44 it started to handle really weird, it would torque steer like mad.
