Hey guys. So I know about the line lock mechanic in BeamNG. But I can't seem to figure it out. I turn it on in the menu, and it just seems to half-heartedly put on the brakes. I've tried it holding the brake pedal down, I've tried it turning it on with the brake pedal down. I just can't seem to figure out how to get it to work properly. But maybe I'm misunderstanding how it's supposed to operate. It's my belief that the line Lock works for drag transmissions. Basically allows you to hit high engine RPM while in gear. Basically causing the rear wheels to spin in place without coming off the line. Is that correct? Or is it a misunderstanding on how it's supposed to operate? I'm just trying to get better times with my drag loadout for my gav.
You are combining two things here: Line lock and transbrake. Line lock "locks" brake lines, essentially enabling you to brake the front wheels without braking the rear wheels. This is used for burnouts. The transbrake engages 1st and reverse gear at the same time (that only works with automatics), this allows you to raise the engine rpm, build boost and tension parts of the drivetrain without transferring any power to the wheels.
A slightly detailed explanation: Line lock is use to do burnouts, no tire temperature is modeled in BeamNG but IRL, burnout is used to raise the temperature of the rear wheels. Line lock locks the current brake pressure. With rear line lock, engage it without touching the brake, then hit the brake and gas at the same time to spin the rear wheels. With front line lock, hit the brake engage the lock, release the brake and hit the gas. Line lock is NOT part of the transmission since you don't want the drive wheel to spin before launch because a spinning wheel loses traction, you want the wheel to be stationary right before race start. To do so, use the transbrake. Transbrake locks the transmission's output shaft, which allows you to raise your engine RPM to make the torque converter do max torque multiplication. Shift into D, drive to the starting line, engage the transbrake, floor it, and disengage the transbrake when the light turns green.
You are half right, line lock is used in drag racing, but not for launch. Line Lock is typically used for burnouts to heat up the tires in preparation for racing. For Automatics a line lock is not needed, but it's sometimes used to slow the rocking or bucking motion associated with bump boxes. For manuals, it can be used to hold while the Clutch is depressed, for those who can't heel/toe the brake clutch or brake/throttle. However that is being replaced by drift brake (master cylinder on a floor mounted lever) in some cars, The most Notable of those is Cleetus McFarland's Leroy drag car
Everyone's talking about launching and trans brakes but he did specifically ask about spinning the rear wheels while staying in place. Line lock in the game isn't very intuitive. If you want your rear brakes disabled so you can do a burnout, set your line lock to Rear Line-Lock. To engage it both parking brake and service brakes have to be off. I find it easiest to just stay in neutral. Then hit control+alt+space and you'll get the line lock activated message. If you had the brakes on you'll still get the message but it won't work. Then just hold your brakes and put it in gear and floor it. Front brakes will lock up and rear brakes won't engage at all and bald eagles will start escaping
Line lock only works when you first depress the brakes then activate the solenoid to "lock the wheels" you wish to hold. Not sure in game (Never used it in game), but real life Line Lock doesn't just activate at the push of a button, or well it does, but without pressure to hold the solenoid will operate, but with no pressure.
Tbh, having a UI app similar to a button box would be helpful, like the engine start stop button along with the diff lock button, we wouldn't need to ctrl+shift+alt+y any control lol, and it could also have multiple pages?
That's precisely what it does in the game. Depending on which axle you lock, the exact usage differs as well (assuming RWD car: if you lock the fronts, you need to apply pressure first, then lock. If you lock the rears, it's the opposite, lock, then apply pressure) I'm afraid we currently don't have any resources available to make a dedicated UI for such a niche feature
Just to clarify, the confusion is due to my misunderstanding. I didn't even know trans brake was a thing. (Now tied to my down arrow on my controller.) I was essentially looking for an analog to dumping the clutch on a manual transmission while drag racing. The trans brake is exactly what I was looking for. I had erroneously assumed that somehow the line lock was for that purpose.
What about putting these options in radial menu? Also Ctrl+Alt+Space is quite... big if you know what I mean (not to mention bigger monstrosity - transbrake Shift+Ctrl+Alt+Space).
