Well its been a while since I posted on here, quite a bit has happened since my last post on 7th Jan 2021, rebuilt my computer (mentioned that before!), Formula 1 getting going and I am doing a rather hefty database for it with some 66000 data cells at the moment at round 9...by round 23 I expect to be around....oh about 167,000 data cells....

Been spending way too much time on reddit....(I did 100k upvotes in 282 days for heavens sake! shows how much time I have spent on there!)

Well since sometime around mid June I was looking around for RAM because I felt it was time I needed to boot my system specs up more...okay so a system like mine is pretty hot stuff, Core i9-10920X, GTX980Ti and enough hard drive space that I don't have to worry about upgrading there and 32GB 2133Mhz memory (running XMP to 2400Mhz)

I finally decided in mid June I would upgrade my RAM but to how much dare ask, well I started looking around at the 64GB mark and it was pretty boring around there but the RAM (I like which is Corsair Vengeance LPX due to its reliability) and the only set I found at 64GB was an 8 stick set and it didn't feel right to me....

So I looked a little higher, my motherboard can take up to 256GB of RAM (I am not that crazy to go looking at 256GB of RAM...because Price!) so I settled down to 50% total RAM on my current system

My old Motherboard I could run a Max of 64GB due to my 5960X chip being unable to run the rated 128GB due to it wasn't a 6950X chip, its rated at 3200Mhz speed and YES I am running it at the XMP rated speed of 3200Mhz!

To cut a long story short I went for a set of Corsair Vengeance LPX 128GB worth of memory....so I have QUADROUPLED the memory capacity in my system from that one upgrade...and nope I aint running RAM disks!

To give you an example of just how loony this upgrade is, when I was running 32GB of RAM, I was at most using between 42 and 48% of it in normal operations with Chrome and Discord in operation, with Chrome being the RAM hog it normally is eating up to around 6GB which was annoying...

But now under my 128GB RAM setup I am running at most 12% total RAM usage now, so I am pleased I went for this upgrade, I was meaning to do it back in January but due to budget restraints I couldn't do it, I had to wait until July to get the new RAM that I wanted back in January

I am pleased that I no longer have to worry about my 5 year old RAM giving out on me, I am not gonna sell it, I have plans for that specific ram in future

After looking around for old car brochures and price liste i noticed that there are very few going around on the internet so my idea would be to do a bit of a community effort to digitize the ones we have i for example have lots of older Skoda ones and so on. The only thing is where to store them though.

I think there are a few sites doing this, but if you're interested I have a Pontiac catalog from 1993 (prior to the release of the fourth-generation Firebird, unfortunately) sitting around here somewhere, and some Hyundai and Kia brochures from more recently assuming those aren't all ruined.

I've got one from my 99 Regal in mint condition. If you set something up I'll try and submit it.

Went to an antique market up in Georgia once and spent an hour looking through a milk crate full of 70s and 80s car brocures.

Today i learned an important lesson and that is that you should never try and run a CPU with a broken off VSS pin in a motherboard. Also if you do that never ever run a working CPU in that board because guess who doesnt have a working PC anymore now.

This thread seems to be abandoned which kinda makes me sad, I always liked reading what people are up to....

I just gone through old emails and remembered that I applied to be a mod on the official BeamNG Discord, signed the NDA (that I'm hopefully not breaching right now) and all. They never got back to me... Oh well.

Been playing a game called Death Trash lately, it's a bit like the classic Fallout games but in real time which makes the game so much more playable for me. It's still in early access but there's a lot of potential IMO.

Anyone in here that can suggest a good photoshop alternative for linux? Been using Affinity Photo for the past years and kinda bummed out that it's not available on linux (I tried Wine, to say that it doesn't work would be an understatement).

GIMP is the obvious choice here, never really got into using it for some reason, gonna give it another go I guess. Gonna look at Inkscape too, thanks

IBM POWER always intrigued me but I know almost nothing about it apart from the old PowerPC CPUs and the PowerPC-based chips in older Nintendo consoles .

POWER is still around, nowadays it's mostly used for Linux servers, AI and high-performance computing thanks to its massive scalability, superiority in parallel applications and strong performance-per-watt. There have been major modernizations to the architecture but you can still run Mac OS 9 in a virtual machine (NOT an emulator, meaning the userland code is actually running natively!) thanks to typical IBM backwards compatibility.

I priced out an entry-level x86 HP ProLiant server to comparable specifications... it cost thousands of dollars more BEFORE adding graphics and storage, and still didn't have as many threads or as much cache, nor was it nearly as expandable! And that's before we consider the obvious alternative, a brand-new Mac Pro... LMAO no
