If you ever visit USA stay away from northeast. Maybe like Maine is ok but the New york/New Jersey/Connecticut tri-state area is easily the worst part of the country IMO.

I gotta ask just one thing about your radios: Do you lot have dedicated stations for each decade, like one station for '50s, another for the '60s in each state/county ? If im driving across some great plains or some place in an Oldsmobile the fun would be short lived if there was no period correct radio

Even considering California? Because that would have to be up there for me, especially as a place to live.

nope! most stations here are defined by genre, but even then they're pretty loose
usually you get a handful of contemporary, classic rock, christian, mom pop, and occasionally something eclectic on the lower band, as well as news and podcasts

I agree living there but it is fun to visit. It depends on where you are in California too. It's very large with many wilderness and scenic areas. Good road trip state. You could probably say the same about upstate NY.
I would bet in most areas of the US you will be able to pick up a classic rock station. But as you travel along FM stations will fade out and you'll be searching again. Have you ever heard of XM satellite radio? It has exactly what you describe with 40s, 50s, 60s, etc stations.

Here in my part of Alaska there's like 3 different oldies stations and they've gradually moved closer and closer together. Little to no 60s, some 70s, lots of 80s, a little 90s. One of them is more variety than oldies, so it allows more 90s and a little bit of 00s.

    Terrestrial radio is a mess.

No i have not but i am not unawares of satellite radio, though i doubt some early fifties car will have such an advanced infotainment system. Hmmm how would i listen to smooth swingin' sounds of Perry Como to the beat of some flathead 6 thundering away up a mild incline ?...

Anywhere in the US you should be able to pick up a classic rock or oldies station. Unless you're really out in the back country.
What about NZ? Isn't that where you're from?

Australian, we have classic rock n roll stations, two actually (well in Perth anyways) but i cant have them on all the time, otherwise i have to listen to the 80s dribble they all have to play at some point. And yeah thats what i was planning to do at some point in the future, grab a -cheap- classic and hit the road with no where to go, in a country with such nice roads and gas is still so cheap hmmm

AM/FM radio is terrible in the states no matter what station you listen to. Same dumb corporate shit playlists between commercials. It's satellite or spotify for me.
I understand your fantasy involves using period-correct audio technology though...maybe get some 8-tracks.
