    Hello everyone,

Please note that the default location of the User Folder has been changed with the release of 0.22. After the update, all mods will also be disabled.

As part of these change some of your data has been transferred automatically, this includes folders:
    • raceRecord
    • saves
    • trackEditor
    • replay
    • mods
    • screenshots
    • settings
And vehicle configuration (vehicles/**.pc along with corresponding .jpg files).

If you would like to move the rest of your files manually, please follow the steps below:
    1. Open the old path to User Folder (by default My Documents\BeamNG.Drive)
    2. Navigate to the new location through Launcher → Manage User Folder → Open in Explorer
    3. Transfer the files from the old folder as needed
Starting with 0.22 the data inside of the User Folder will be versioned, you will find more information on these changes in this documentation article.

Could this potentially be causing Steam "disk write error" faults when updating? Restarts and cache clearing haven't solved the problem for me, so I'm stuck on 0.21.4 right now. My hard drive registers no issues or corruption, and other games installed on the same drive (Factorio comes to mind) still update fine, so I'm convinced the update's done something.

UPD. Setting a custom path solves the problem related to folder change.
    Option 1
    - simply go to BeamNG folder, find "startup.ini" in it and change the user folder to whatever you want:
    upload_2021-3-29_21-26-20.png
    Option 2 -
open launcher, click the middle button out of 3 and set custom path via UI.
For me, the new BeamNG folder was created on default drive where Windows is installed. For examle, my path is:
    "C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\BeamNG.drive\0.22.0.0"
Lots of users with a small SSD (64 - 128 GB) can not store their BeamNG folder on a system drive since it can get huge - mine is at 45 GB.

Yep, I'm in the same boat, although I have enough space to load all my mods as of now. Still, it would be infinitely preferable to have a way to configure where the userfolder actually exists, since currently I'm a bit short on space.

Check if your antivirus is blocking something BeamNG related. Mine was blocking the .exe which prevented it from updating.

Thanks for the advice. Already tried that before posting here, added an exception to Steam. Luckily, it loaded normally after I restarted my computer for the second time. No idea what was causing it, though.

    I don't understand the issue:

The default path has changed, custom paths still works like before. If you were using a custom path, the game will keep using it.
The only difference is that instead of
    F:\BeamNG.drive\files
    you will have
    F:\BeamNG.drive\<version>\files
As the userfolder data is versioned now

Thank you for your help and clarifying the issue. Though, I would like to say that my path changed more significantly since it switched to another disk.
    My old v 0.21.4 path:
    F:\Users\User\Documents\BeamNG.drive
My new v 0.22 path picked by the game automatically upon update:
    C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\BeamNG.drive\0.22.0.0\settings

Thanks for reminding about the possibility of making a custom path, it is made via launcher, right?

So you originally had your whole windows user folder moved out of C?

I moved all the libraries (e.g. Documents, Downloads, Videos, Images) from C to F to save space once I got my PC. Not entire user folder, so the programs which access stuff like AppData still write their data to C.
    Sorry if this confused you.
Maybe this is a 0.0001% rare occurence situation.
I will try to change user path in launcher once the download of the next update is done and this will probably fix the issue for me and anyone else.
Very grateful for the help from BeamNG team!

It's not that uncommon. It seems like the specific case of having moved things in windows rather than purely the beamng folder is something we don't correctly handle when moving the beamng data. Forwarding to have someone look into it.

For real. I haven't bothered setting a custom path for beamng since my documents is set to my game drive anyway. So many games pollute the documents folder I don't even use it for documents, so...

To my mind, appdata should not contain data that you ever expect users to interact with.

UGH. I have to agree that this is a horrible idea. 99% of games and applications put their USER data in the Documents folder. At least I see we can use a custom path to change things back, but I assume one of two things will happen in the future: 1) Updates will overwrite the ini file, so we will have to keep editing it, or 2) The game will eventually not let us have custom paths.

I understand this was to help relieve issues related to broken mods, but you do realize that people are simply going to copy their files to the new location, breaking the mods anyway, AND you've added a layer of frustration by changing the location. Then again, I suppose it's your application, so you're free to uproot the user experience all ya want.

The move to appdata is because Microsoft doesn't want you to store any meaningful amount of data in the documents folder...
Same goes for many AV programs.

microsoft is certainly allowed to have an opinion, but it's usually the wrong one, when it comes to user experience.

i've never heard of AV programs caring that you have hundreds of gigs of game mods in your documents folder.

    the cloud was a mistake.

why hasn't microsoft just introduced a system library folder for game related content???? they are a gaming company now, no?

Many AVs see "lots of data stuff happening in documents" as ransomware... So they block it and create and create a huge pile of issues.

And yes, there is no "good" way to do this atm...

I copy-and-pasted everything from the old userfolder, to the new one, did I do it right?
