I really want to have some cool sense of speed in BeamNG, so when you get up to high speeds the camera starts shaking which heightens the sense of speed. Currently the sense of speed is pretty decent with the static camera but i would love to have some sort of camera shake going on, some may hate it, some may like it (i would love it). I know this isn't an arcade game, it's a softbody physics simulator, but still it would be cool... Is a camera shake mod possible? does one already exist perhaps?
does your head start shaking uncontrollably in real life when you reach a certain speed? no. you have your answer
Man, I know his question was... questionable? But that was a really rude answer for no good reason. I believe a camera shake mod would be possible, it would sorta give that Need for Speed feel. I don't know how you would go about implementing it, but maybe something similar to that one wheel vibration mod.
If your answer is not rude, it's pretty useless. When i'm driving my car I can't see it from behind, does that make the 3rd person view a no go for BeamNG ? Plus there is a fov modifier based on speed similar to what the OT said and it could be expanded. A camera shake and other optionnal effects may be a nice addition imo.
I think it's useless and unrealistic. This game has been stuck in early access for years and I think that the developers have better things to do than add arcade-style visual effects that are unneeded and time-consuming.
Maybe add camera to crash test dummy's head, so when using the driver camera it reacts to bumps and corners realistically(?). It should try keep the vision centered at all times. Using a modern/racing seat and seat belts would reduce camera shakes/slide compared to a 50's sofa seat without a seat belt. Sounds like fun.
What's also unrealistic is having a chase camera in the first place. Not like there's a camera man with wings and constantly tethered to the back of the car all the time. It's a video game; it can never be realistic. PS: Let's not forget that Glow City is in the game...
I have tried this and it's mostly just annoying, moves around a lot, you crash in a way that the dummy falls over and then the camera is useless, unless you always use seatbelts and race seats on the dummy which ruins half the fun of it. The issue with this might be that the seats in game don't have softness so all bumps are really violent from the inside if the suspension didn't even them out. Or just my dummy Jbeam is bad, that's also possible.
What about drones ? It could be simply a drone flying behind your car. And the problem here is that it's simply a it weird for the camera to shake like that, it really doesn't make much sense.
That's what I meant with the centered vision. Head/eyes would need some kind of anchor nodes (=imitating muscles and and the sense of balance) in front of vehicle to reduce the bobblehead and body collapse effect. Seats should have slide friction and spring/softness values etc. Lot of work but it would also add a lot to driving immersion if done properly. The first four minutes vs the rest:
Camera in first person when you press number 7 on your keyboard. No GUI inside, and you can change how separate the camera is to the roll and motion of the car.
The camera shake would make sense, because not like a drone could stay perfectly behind the car while it's speeding or turning.
But on a flat road ? I agree that on bumpy roads it makes sense, but on a perfectly flat highway it's weird.
Would love to see a camera shake mod too! Just because the game is focused on realism doesn't mean it can't get cinematic effects added to it via modding or even officially (as an optional choice) to please a larger audience and make up for the lack of physical forces. Not to mention using any view besides the driver's position is already basically unrealistic.
I'm going to say it again with more detail. Camera section in settings. Camera button number 7, driver cam, has this feature. Camera: Driver section. Change Field of View, Inertia strength, Lock to horizon % and a few other settings. The game already has this function.
