Are mountain roads - or any of the highways based on actual roads?

Please forgive me for the n00bishness of this question. I haven't actually played, but watch videos of the game on YT.

Are the highways, particularly the grey mountain road that serpentines around the cliff, based on or modeled after/inspired by actual highways? Or are these completely imagined?

    Thanks

I think this, as I don't remember ever seeing such a map.

The only "snakey" road map there is, is the "Tail of The Dragon" by @bob.blunderton

probably imagined but I know that WCUSA has some stuff based off real life - like Laguna Seca's chicane turn on the racetrack and san francisco's hills in the city. The bridge too.

If by “snakey” you mean lots of hairpins, Stelvio Pass is a suggestion.

Thanks everyone. The tunnel looks SO familiar from photos or other movies. But I'm probably imagining or false-remembering.

@Sithhy™ is right, Tail of The Dragon (also known as 'Deal's Gap') is completely 100% based on real terrain data, with the road re-carved to be properly smooth to drive on. It's as close to the real thing as I could get it at the time, and it's pretty good fun (and the AI should still work with the exception of the north end bridge, they'll stop there, it's a quarter-mile from the north end of a 12~13 mile or more trek so I'm not worried). Thank-you for the mention.

Pikes Peak is also one I believe is modeled after something real.
There was an Australian map similar to Tail of The Dragon but done with Lidar data, it's pretty good so look for it. I think the person who made it is now a staff member.

Roane County - the entire thing - is made off real terrain data / road locations. I spent a LOT of time on Google Earth looking up data points for this one. DO check it out - requires a decent PC to run and the 8GB RAM requirement is absolutely no joke. If you have more than a quad-core and fill Roane County with traffic, you'll want a 12~16GB chunk of *available* RAM for this game without a doubt.
So entirely, enjoy roughly 16(?) miles of US Interstate Route 40, over 18 uninterrupted miles of state route 27, state route 70 (east-west), Decatur Highway, and many others in a very expansive (if occasionally a bit barren or sparsely detailed outside of the 3 major urban areas) map and lose yourself for a few hours... Literally. Google map can help you find your way out though, and occasionally, if you get lucky, directions to the highway is sometimes posted. If not just hit 'home' key to go back to the spawn point, or use free-cam to fly about and look for someplace more interesting.

My other two maps - Nevada Interstate and Los Injurus City Map project (formerly So-Cal Interstate) are fictitious themed maps. Though I believe Nevada Interstate's terrain is real terrain from the Black Hills of Nevada, or something similar. Maybe it says in the original 'Black Hills' map where it was from - Ouerbacker would know as he made the original - I only added 60 miles plus of road to it, a snaking highway, and lots more jumps / intersections / etc, with permission of-course. Both of THESE maps feature highways drawn out like circuit races, that fall back on themselves seamlessly as you ring the map, allowing you uninterrupted driving bliss until you inevitably get over-confident & poo-poo a corner so bad you have to restore the vehicle. That last bit is something that happens to me more than I'd care to share, but know you're not as alone in that ditch out there in the middle of nowhere as you might think.

Fictitious themed maps are the most practical and straight-forward thing to make, as maybe you'll be able to design it much better for moderate-to-low spec computers, being able to place mountains, tall building rows, large lakes etc to better mitigate performance issues that tend to follow apparent density of urban areas in most all (not just this) 3D game.

--Surely I missed a few, somewhere out there.
    --Cheers!
