I'm taking a transportation engineering elective this semester. I feel like it's morally problematic that every time we learn about a geometric design feature I wonder "how would this look in BeamNG"

I've spent the last 20mn thinking about how each type of barrier end treatments would launch a car in slightly different ways.

Cobalt Super Sport, yes. Surprised me too when I first heard about it. Also makes me laugh, to see some American FWD compact with twist-beam rear suspension outrun the official car of "I think I'm into JDM but really I just watched The Fast and the Furious".

But CHEAP INTERIOR = BAD CAR, so it apparently doesn't matter.

US equivalent of the Peugeot 206 or Renault Clio - decent car when it comes to bang for the buck, better than its reputation and pretty nice in the sporty version, but not really something to aspire to.

    About 10 grand.

"Better than its reputation" applies to a lot of American cars, honestly. Same with the V6 Cavalier.

Thank you for the well wishes; loan issues could torpedo it (since, y'know, I've tried to avoid doing anything debt-related my entire life) but I sure hope not at this point. The other possible problem is the pinging engine; dealer took it to the shop today and "could not replicate the problem". I'm going back for a second test tomorrow (will also try to pick up an interim PSU on the same trip) and this time I'm taking my phone so I can record it making that sound.

If it's stopped pinging despite nothing being done to it, what would that indicate?

They could have just run seafoam or something in it to fix it. My friend has a Cobalt with a similar issue (I assume, have heard the Cobalt in person, video would be helpful for Mitsubishi) that he hasn't fixed yet. His car has almost 200,000 miles on it though, so it could be a combination of things. Try to see if the dealer will let you get it inspected by a 3rd party mechanic shop, as they will be less biased and tell you the whole story. If you can, get a warranty for the car as a precaution.

What is wrong with the Sunfire?

Sunbird, you mean? Like a complete moron, I put too much oil in the engine. It had "self-changing oil", i.e. a massive leak, and one day I got lazy and topped it up while it was sitting on a slope rather than backing it down the driveway to fill it... bam, piston rings ruined in at least three cylinders and a bent rod in at least one. According to my neighbor, rebuilding an engine yourself isn't as hard as it sounds and could bring fixing it back into the realm of affordability, so we'll see.

The problem with taking the Lancer to a third-party mechanic is that I don't know any in Anchorage and am under kind of a time crunch (work back here in Wasilla from 1:30PM).

Yes, I meant Sunbird. Your neighbor is correct, it is not difficult at all to rebuild an engine. It is easy if you get a good service manual and keep everything super organized. Older GM cars are mechanically very simple compared to other brands, so it shouldn't be too terrible to rebuild. If you do decide to go that route, make sure you measure everything so you know what condition the engine is in and what needs to be replaced.

URGENT: Lancer pinging seems to be audible only to me and only me, and is completely inaudible with the hood open; what does this mean?

IIRC @Kueso had one before his RSX... I think they look nice. One of the supercharged SS’s seem like something I’d drive if I could find a not-completely-beat one for cheap.

Could you describe it? Sorry if you have already. Could be something weird with warm/cold run cycles and the car running lean, but I would recommend getting a PPI (Pre-Purchase Inspection) if you’re serious about buying it.
