I have returned from my fact-finding mission. The fun thing about car shopping during the plandemic is that they don't want to stick a salesman in the car with you, so you can set your own route and push the car a little harder than you would while accompanied. The annoying part is, the Miata I thought I'd be driving turned out to be broken too, so I ended up going with my last choice, the 2014 Mazda3.

Which turned out to be an automatic even though the listing said manual. Good grief and a half!

I drove the Mazda anyway. Here are my verdicts on these cars:

    2014 Mazda3i Touring Hatchback:

+Frickin' rips when you step on it, actually couldn't keep my foot down as long as I'd hoped because I really didn't want to get "taxed" in someone else's car
+Handling seems nice and neutral, with a little understeer depending on how you go into a corner, and plenty of grip even on studded snow tires
+Despite it being a (presumably) DBW automatic, the throttle response is as good in manual mode as any cable-throttle manual I've ever driven
+Manual mode can easily cover up flaws in the shift logic
+Brakes have good bite and resistance
+Even the ride is good, firm enough not to bounce and wallow over bumps, but doesn't beat you up either
-Exhaust note reminds of a coffee grinder
-Driving position is just horrid, if there was a way to lean the seat back I couldn't find it, so I ended up too close to the steering wheel but nearly too far from the pedals
-Over-the-shoulder visibility is kind of bad, mirrors are kind of narrow
    -Manual mode can downshift roughly
-This particular specimen seems to have a very pronounced idle shake, if it just had condensation in the tank from sitting around, then that's one thing, but otherwise...
-And a disconcerting buzz from the tires at certain very specific speeds
-And a very noticeable scratch on the hood, not too fussed about that but it doesn't portend well

=Seems a little sketch, and with the automatic it's not quite as driver as it could be, but I can't keep myself from wanting it anyway.

    2019 Chevrolet Spark LS:

    +Has enough power, I guess
+Good fuel economy, if you believe the trip computer
    +Brakes have good bite
    -Has OnStar
-Worst DBW lag I've ever seen, plus some rev-hang on upshifts
-Worst clutch I've ever seen, stiff, uncommunicative pedal with about 10 miles of excess travel
-Worst shifter I've ever seen, clunky and notchy with the most idiotically long throws you could imagine
-Pedal setup is just AIDS, several times I tried to heel-and-toe only to miss the gas pedal completely with my heel, what the frick was GM thinking when they set that up
-Can definitely feel the short wheelbase and deadaxle back end in the corners, it almost feels kind of twitchy, like it really wants to spin out even when you don't feel like you're anywhere near the limit
-On the freeway it actually shimmies left and right, or else is vulnerable to crosswinds to slight they aren't even making trees move

=Given how much people love to hate the V6 Cavalier, I am both amused and disheartened by how frequently and how thoroughly much newer cars fail to reach its standard.

I imagine he would react angrily and forcefully. Very good chance of being taken to jail.
I can still get the employee rate for the rental cars. The rates are so cheap right now it's laughable. It cost me $17 for a day of rental for the Optima, including the insurance which waves any damage costs. I got my friend to come along and record some nice angles. Then I edited it.
I was offered a free upgrade to a nicer car, but I got the Optima because I know they're easy to sling around.

The manual Fiestas and Focuses are also worth buying. Great driving dynamics and decent reliability.

Don't those have a lawsuit for the transmissions breaking? It might only be on Certain trim levels, but it makes the cars borderline undrivable.

IIRC the automatics are the problematic ones, with the manuals being OK.

I was even researching these as college cars, but decided not to buy a manual.

My friend had a manual Fiesta that lost 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears before the warranty was up. I don't know much more about the car than that.
Maybe where you live, but there is one in the US where we don't get diesels.

    Following excludes ST's.
The fiesta uses the IB5, a transmission with a reputation for being rock solid and used across many many front wheel drive fords for many years.
Focus uses a mix of IB5's and MTX75's. MTX75 is pretty much what happens when you take the already solid IB5 and bulk it up, reputation for being a solid reliable transmission used in engine swaps galore.
Both have huge aftermarket part potentials and see track and even rally use, with sequential shifters even being available.

Been and checked. Lawsuit was only for power shift dual clutch auto transmissions, there is no lawsuit for a manual car
