Most likely the game version they used was the version with the Vivace that had the exterior model done.

Those are nice - and definitely doable with only a slight stretching of current content limits, but I can't quite shake the feeling that you're not quite thinking big enough.

I'm talking about taking things up to full-scale competition monster truck proportions.

Now it is certainly possible to build a truck that size on what started as a heavy-duty stock truck frame, but it requires very large leaf spring brackets being welded to the frame to gain the height required. Here's a good photo rundown of that exact build being completed - note especially the photo of the frame by itself in the garage.

But this didn't last long in competition because of the sheer forces involved in handling the weight of the truck going over obstacles at speed, particularly cars. Frames bent and broke, and lots of steel was welded on to strengthen it. When that proved inadequate, the next solution was essentially to weld a second frame under the main one, creating a subframe.

Eventually the idea came to just take the frame from the military trucks they were getting axles from. This was made difficult by the need to shorten them and mount all the right parts - they practically had to be re-engineered. An easier solution was just to build a large, square frame out of box tubing and mount everything on that. This was called a 'straight frame':

This was a lot more durable at the expense of adding weight and slowing the truck down. The truly great thing about it was that the same basic design could be easily lengthened or shortened depending on the wheelbase of the truck you wanted to build. The Pony Express up there essentially was a stock mustang body and frame dropped on top of the straight frame. (you can see a close-up picture of the rear end here.)

If BeamNG ever does a monster truck, I think that the straight frame would be an ideal option because of its adaptability (we could literally put anything we wanted on top of it by adjusting the length of the frame itself and the driveshafts), and its durability (because the first thing anybody is going to do with a monster truck in BeamNG is abuse it). I can definetly see a smaller version with a stock frame being made available as a stepping stone for career mode, but I think that we'd all find the full-scale truck more usable.

I suppose I should cite my source for all the info on the development of monster truck frames. This page is a very good resource: https://therangerstation.com/Magazine/winter2007/monstertech.shtml

I would think that if they were going to go to the effort of modelling an entire chassis and suspension for a military truck, they would take the bit of extra time to make a military cab for it as well, making an entirely new vehicle.

and on the topic of that instagram I series video, what are the chances that that's the revamped small island?

Straight from that article (which is the same source that YellowRusty used):
"at that time this just meant a trip down to the junk yard to collect a pair of old military 2 1/2 ton axles and a set of discarded tractor tires which were then bolted, welded or occasionally tie wrapped on to the family pick-up truck"

Most of us are not asking for an official CRD. At least two of us are just asking for what's in that above quote.

Well, there's more to it than just "axles". Axles themselves imply planetary hubs and specific steering.

A monster truck would also require custom, high-travel shocks, large leaf springs, and maybe even some form of long 4-links.

That's even before we take wheels (and all the limitations of the pressureWheel system) into account.

Not saying it can't be done, quite the contrary. Just, don't underestimate the amount of work a vehicle like this would require.

I'm not trying to undermine the work of anyone who would have to design and model that suspension set up. I'm just saying it's not nearly as complicated as your guys' tube frame truck and within the limits of official content compared to the Hopper crawler, which also has some serious suspension but also has frame modifications on top of that.

Time to launch my off-roader off of the hill in the middle of the island for the 475369459th time.

So talking about the limit of official content, future content to vehicles we know are getting updated soon, complexity of in game content, and discussing what content is worth adding, is all banned now on the Update Speculation Thread?

No, but turning it into a monster truck discussion thread is :)

Hope there's other diff options than standard and race, because I want a damn viscous 50/50 AWD thrash machine.

It was what, 10 posts over 3 pages? The 2 posts complaining about it is 20% to that number. Hardly a dedicated discussion to it. The truck is scheduled for updates and another truck just got a major drivetrain modification two months ago. Hardly off topic or derailing the thread.

Speaking of D-Series configs, I wonder how the unibody-on-frame will be handled in terms of configs. The current UI is already pushed without the extra body style.

Hope it gets a small village similar to ECA's coast village. And also a port, for realism.

I can see the next major update focusing on vehicle dynamics/electronics.

We've seen the electronic diffs being tested on the ETK 800 and now the Vivace. I'm hoping the update will bring it to both of those and also the K series. I wonder if we will also see the teased drive modes changes (Eco, sport, drift etc) to take full advantage of it.

Map updates will just be a bonus if they do come.

    See this post

Map team and vehicle team are seperate teams, no reason we should be seeing one without the other. Especially with what appears to be 2 Small Island teasers in one week.

I strongly hope that on the map update front, we see more than just Small Island. Hopefully we'll see Port and Industrial Site, as they share assets with each other, Small Island, and the already revamped Port, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed we see a JRI remaster too, that and the ETK Driver Experience center would the last maps really needing major work imo.
