Dell dimension 3100

so I have a dell dimension 3100 that I found when I moved into my new house. I have 512 mb of ram (knowing that’s clearly not enough) and an MSI R4350 graphics card waiting to be installed. It runs windows xp, I stripped it down to its case then rebuilt it and haven’t plugged it in since a big spark came out of the outlet. I do not know what type of processor it has, and I don’t know how big the hard disk is. But the big question is, will it play beam bf and other games like that?

May I ask why you are trying to game with an OS older than half the forum members?..

 

Well, try to install windows 7 then try to install 8.1. Upgrade the ram to Max and get a better GPU. AND then try to get and older version on your hands

I new budget-gaming rig will cost less than this upgrade , plus run way faster and be upgradable down the road. Even if you max-out an old Dell Dimension (I've done 4 for an office and relatives) it will never be more than an over-sized media-box. Look on pcpartpicker.com for the best deals on parts to put together a PC for less than $400. If your old Dell has an LCD monitor, DVD drive and KB/MS you can save $ on accessories too. Throw the rest away, especially the PSU.

AMD Ryzen/Radeon based systems are the best bang of buck especially for the low end, while Intel CPU's and Motherboards are slightly faster/more efficient at the mid/high-end. For video cards, Nvidia is the king of the hill, but not as budget friendly and AMD.

 

I got an msi R3450 but it doesn’t fit the thing’s motherboard.... assuming it’s too modern for that old brick.

 

That old machine only supports AGP video cards (if it has a BROWN slot).
The last AGP video card was a 4670 512mb/3770 512mb card or close to that, by AMD/ATI.
AGP died around 2006 with the last cards coming out around 2007~2008, and only being DirectX 10 at best.
Nothing with AGP video ports on it will run BeamNG. Nothing. Don't even try.
DO NOT even attempt to retro-fit the machine for BeamNG use. You would get 2fps~5fps if it would even run at all (it wouldn't, I can almost promise that).

Get a decent computer, used, off amazon, or from a local PC shop.
You'll need (for this and other common games) at-least:
8gb of system RAM
any Ryzen processors or i5/i7 processor
a desktop, not a laptop unless it's less than 2~3 years old and rather high-end with a dedicated GPU
A dedicated graphics card with at-least 2GB of video RAM (it may run on 1GB cards, but it will be anything but pretty).
A few GB's of space on the hard drive or preferably a solid state drive. Solid state drives are in-order of magnitudes faster than hard drives, but offer less capacity for your dollar. On a steep budget get a 30$ 240gb solid state drive and a 50$ hard drive and you should have plenty of space after installing your OS to the SSD.
Used XEON-based machines from HP, Lenovo, or even Dell (look up the processor on the intel archive or wikipedia.org to make sure it's not more than 5~6 years old) can offer a sweet deal and are usually good if you avoid the 'small form factor' or SFF cases (get a tower like regular gaming machines).
Throw in a video card that doesn't require a dedicated power connection such as an nvidia 1050, 1650, or similar (avoid the 1030) card and you have a nice multimedia / gaming machine on the cheap.

I ran beamng on intel hd graphics, 4gb ram and an i5 7200u. I will try and find some parts that will get it to run.

I found something interesting. What is the socket type? If it is LGA 775 you are lucky. You can get some beefy CPUs for that socket.
