Unless you are willing to buy second hand, that is going to be a fairly tough price point to hit for gaming. Building your own PC is more or less out of the question, because a legit Windows 10 licence will eat up about 1/4 of your budget before you even have any hardware. For BeamNG you really do need a graphics card for the game to run smoothly, but within that budget you won't be able to get one. So my best advice would be to buy a pre-built that uses standard off the shelf components, but without a graphics card. This will likely perform about the same as a normal office PC for gaming (aka, not very well). Then at a later date your child can get a Graphics card (for around £130) and plug it in without having to change any other components. Depending on your family situation this holiday, it may be the case that if relatives give money, they might already have enough to buy a graphics card quite soon. Since that is one of the biggest factors in having a computer that feels quick doing day to day tasks outside of gaming. They can be a little more complex to add to a PC after you have it set up, so it makes sense to buy a computer with one if you want something hassle free. The above example also comes with a 450w PSU, which is far more than that computer actually needs (as sold). Meaning you can add a graphics card in at a later date without having to make any other changes to the system.
Just found a pair of old computer magazines - one from '98, the other from'09. The price differences are astonishing. 19" CRT monitors for the money that 75" UHD TVs go for nowadays, 200 MHz processor desktops for nice MacBook Pro money or DV cameras for decent used car money. Even 2009 prices were high. Over 10k PLN for laptops with specs just below what I paid 2700 for recently. Though it made me chuckle that one of the downsides of the first Samsung Galaxy was having pure Android.
I recently bought a One X and i really have to say if not for beam and a few other simulators i wouldnt need a pc because most of the games like forza pr dirt rally run better on the xbox. Also its way cheaper than building a pc that can do 4k yes a xbox cant run all games at 4k 60fps but neither can my pc and my pc cost more than double that.
The current gen of consoles are hopeless. Their CPUs literally bottleneck the GPUs. All hail the AMD Jaguar architecture! Also, good luck getting something like Nvidia Surround or real VR worth a damn on a console anytime soon. Crap little glorified cable boxes they are. If it weren't for the exclusives, I wouldn't have a Nintendo Switch. My Xbox One has turned into a Spyro machine, and only because I didn't want to wait for it to come out on the PC. Okay, I lie, I would have bought a Switch anyway, but for the portability. It's way smaller than my Dell 7577.
Yes the cpus bottleneck the GPU but it works fine enough for games. Also i dont need nvidia surround or VR (Espacially not because seeing without glasses Doesnt work for me and my glasses wont fit under a headset) so a xbox is just fine for what i use it.
Not to mention the endless updates you HAVE to have inorder to play games, and paying for a multiplayer experience. And I can't use a Sony DualShock with an Xbox, and vice versa, but I can do both with a PC. And you can't mod the current gen consoles to any extent worth a damn. And you can't upgrade them. And you can't do custom resolutions or play older, much better games. They're cable boxes for kids and nothing more.
Steam moved to requiring updates to play a few years ago. There are some adapters, with some dubious claims. Yet, I'm sure hackers will find a way. Upgrade from Xbox One to Xbox One X, or PS4 to PS4 Pro And lazy adults. Don't forget console exclusives. About the only reason I'd buy a PS4.
Well, the Oculus VR headsets come with a spacer that can be inserted for those who wear glasses. At least the Quest is like this, and it works really well.
Every VR headset accommodates glasses in some way or another. And if your specific pair don't fit, there are companies that make replacement prescription lenses that will be perfect. Yes, they're expensive, and almost certainly won't be covered by insurance (don't quote me on that, I personally don't need them, and any family/friends who've used my Vive don't have problems with their glasses). VR gaming is still too niche and specialized for consoles (looking at you, PSVR) outside of arcade-type games (Beat Saber, clones, and a few others). Side note, VR in professional, police, and military training, as well as physical and psychological therapy, is only going to grow. Computer simulations have been a part of training for decades, and VR is the next leap. With VR, police forces can simulator life-like, potentially dangerous situations without any risk to anyone involved. In fact, a number of police forces already are.
VR is the next step of simulation in training. As you said, it's growing, and will become the norm. Aside, can someone tell me WHY a NEHALEM architechture proccesor is at $500!?

Those aren't being sold by Amazon. It's always a third party with silly prices. I'm not sure why they do it, but I suspect it's out of consumer gullibility. "Oh, Amazon has it for $500, so that must be the right price." Top tip: below the "Buy it Now" and "Add to cart" buttons is the seller. If the seller isn't Amazon or the manufacturer (or authorized distributor in your country), you're probably getting gouged. I recommend looking other places for the same product. An excellent example of this is the Raspberry Pi. MSRP for the standard model B version has always been $35. There's no reason to pay more. None of the US distributors for the Raspberry Pi sell it on Amazon, and I don't recommend buying it that way because of that.
Thats true i only wonder how stupid some people must be to buy that og Gameboys go in good condition for around 50 euros so why get the one for 5 grand as new.
I knew it! And I found a 3770K for around the same price ($450, best proccesor my 'ole ASRock H61M-VG3 can bolster), and thought it was ridiculous. I hate my computer
Hey guys, I'm back!! The laptop is quite good. The HDD causes quite some lag on startup (makes it unusable for 1.5 - 2 mins) but- Beam runs fine! Am planning to get a SSD next year. Will upgrading to 16gb RAM improve FPS any? Now, I get about 40-50 FPS (1080p normal) in most maps, Italy hates my laptop and the Los Injurus map runs at 20-40FPS (1080p low). EDIT Does anyone want a detailed review?
